Lightless Arbor is the first of the three Dungeons in Last Epoch and one of the primary endgame gold-sinks. This dingy maze allows you to skip some early campaign areas and gamble huge amounts of gold for valuable rewards. Lightless Arbor's boss, the Mountain Beneath, also drops several powerful unique items. This guide will help you master Lightless Arbor's unique mechanic to defeat the Mountain Beneath and access the Vault of Uncertain Fate.

Lightless Arbor Dungeon ability: Burning Amber

The Lightless Arbor is a dark, winding maze. To navigate it, you will need Burning Amber, a unique ability granted when you enter the Dungeon (bound to D by default). The Burning Amber is attached to you and will follow you through the Dungeon, giving off light in an area around it. All enemies outside of this light radius take less damage and deal more damage to you.

By activating the Burning Amber ability with D, you can send it to a target location, and then press D again to recall it to you.

The Burning Amber also has a limited Illumination charge. You lose Illumination when you are hit while the Amber is attached to you. You can restore Illumination by killing Amber Elementals scattered throughout Lightless Arbor.

You can also use Burning Amber to ignite Kindling piles. One of these will block your path between the first two rooms of the Dungeon, serving as a de facto tutorial for the Mountain Beneath's boss mechanics. When the Burning Amber is near Kindling, it will slowly fill a health bar above it. When the bar is full, the Kindling ignites.

Lightless Arbor Boss: The Mountain Beneath

Lightless Arbor's final boss is the Mountain Beneath, a titanic creature that blocks your path to the Vaults of Uncertain Fate. This fight has two phases and will require you to use the Burning Amber to damage the boss.

Phase One

During the first phase of the fight, the Mountain Beneath is immune to all damage. The only way to defeat it is to ignite the two Kindling piles on either end of the arena. Use your attacks to break through the Root Walls blocking the Kindling, then stand near the Kindling or send your Burning Amber to it.

The Mountain Beneath will attack you with giant slams indicated by large green circles on the ground. These cover almost the entire arena but do not reach the Kindling, making the Kindling areas relatively safe to stand. Smaller enemies will also drop from the sky, dealing damage when they land before attacking. These enemies are more likely to force you away from the Kindling with their area attacks. Try to balance leaving the Burning Amber on the Kindling versus keeping it near enemies to reduce their damage.

Once you ignite both piles of Kindling, the Mountain Beneath will stumble forward and open its mouth. Enter it to start phase two.

Phase Two

Inside the Mountain Beneath, you will find the Stone Titan's Heart. Phase Two is simple; destroy the Stone Titan's Heart. More small enemies will spawn while the Heart uses powerful attacks that cover large swaths of the arena. Dodge these attacks using the green area indicators on the ground.

If you have traversal skills or defensive cooldowns like Profane Veil, try to hold them for emergencies.

Lightless Arbor Boss Drops

There are several unique items that only drop from the Mountain Beneath, each with a minimum required tier.

Unique ItemMinimum Lightless Arbor tier to drop
Peak of the Mountain1
Foot of the Mountain2
Face of the Mountain3
Core of the Mountain4

Lightless Arbor Rewards: The Vault of Uncertain Fate

The Vault of Uncertain Fate is your final reward for completing the Lightless Arbor, and Last Epoch's biggest endgame gold sink. When you approach the door to the Vault you will be greeted with a menu that offers increased rewards in exchange for gold. Once you accept or decline the offer, you'll receive another. Declining raises the cost of the next modifier. Accepting costs more the more modifiers you have accepted. Once you've spent enough or reached the cap on accepted modifiers, press Enter Vault to reap your rewards.

Keep an eye on the gold cost as you accept modifiers! At higher tiers, the rarest offers can cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of gold. Lightless Arbor exists to convert huge amounts of gold into items, but don't spend it all in one place!
