Something to really consider - “if you enroll in college and you have the same views when you graduate then what’s the point of going to college…” is a powerful statement that deserves some reflection and consideration. In my Bio of Sexuality & Gender course, first day of class I give them a notecard to write their understanding of human sex, sexuality, and gender. End of the semester they get that card back and a question on their final exam is to reflect on how their views of sexuality, sex, and gender have changed based on their learning. College is about growth, discourse, and learning. Thanks Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for a timely and important article! #academicexcellence #discourse #growthmindset #college

The latest college campus freebies? Naloxone and fentanyl test strips."Test strips and naloxone are becoming more and more common on college campuses, and at least one health department has recommended they be added to school packing lists. For students who didn't bring their own, many campuses are handing them out at welcome fairs, orientation events or campus health centers."This article includes information about steps that nearby UNC Chapel Hill and other universities have taken to combat a growing number of overdoses.Read (or listen to) the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gN6ybU3Y

Is President Magill incapable of making a statement about antisemitism or undertaking an initiative to combat antisemitism without reminding Jews that “all lives matter”:“In addition to the work of the Task Force, President Magill will soon convene and charge a Presidential Commission that will examine the interconnectedness of antisemitism and other forms of hate, including Islamophobia.”What a joke! University of Pennsylvania, you realize this language sends a clear message to Jews that they are not safe … Magill won’t make an unqualified statement in support of Jews. Shameful! You are doing the opposite of what you are purporting to do. Seriously, who among us worried for the safety of Jewish students needs to be assured that the intersectionality of hate is being studied and addressed? What are you thinking Magill? Is this some sort of dog whistle? At this point, how is this not on purpose? Moreover, what will you be doing between now and the interim report of the Task Force on February 15 to keep Jews on campus safe? Will you expel the students parading their antisemitism or projecting hate speech on the side of buildings? Will you ban antisemitic hate organizations like SJP at Penn? Can you even mention antisemitism without “other forms of hate”? Those actions can be taken now. But you are not doing it! Do you just expect Jews on Penn’s campus to live in fear with this environment? Would you allow any other group to live under such threat while the “interconnectideness” of “other forms of hate” are examined? Of course not! This is shameful! No wonder Title VI suites and DOE investigations of Penn are underway. No wonder Congress is examining Penn’s funding and endowment tax exemptions (Penn was highlighted again and again in a recent Congressional Ways and Means Committee hearing on the matter). No wonder donors, large and small, are walking away. No wonder employers are wary of hiring Penn grads. No wonder alumni are embarrassed by their Penn pedigree. All of this is warranted! UPenn, do something now. And don’t equivocate! #bringthembacknow#upenn #defundtheacademy

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧?I just heard the news that The University of Southern California has cancelled a student's graduation speech. The student, Asna Tabassum, had been nominated as this years’ valedictorian, and then her speech got cancelled by the university provost, which as I understand has no precedent at USC. It’s worth considering how do you become a valedictorian in the first place. 🦄 You have to consistently come top of your class across all subjects.🛎 Usually, you have to be nominated by the majority of your professors.🚀 You have to excel both in intellectual and social skills.👯 You have to have a track record of excellent community impact. I’m assuming that the University of Southern California ensures that its valedictorians are chosen after careful consideration of all of the above. Now, I’m no provost or president, just a humble politics teacher, so perhaps I do not understand what is required by the realpolitik of a flagship US university. However, from a strictly pedagogical standpoint, cancelling valedictorian's speech precisely BECAUSE she has political views and BECAUSE she has consistently demonstrated strong moral values and judgement – including about what is currently happening in Gaza -is just appalling. I would personally be ashamed to cancel a student’s class presentation because of that, let alone a speech of a student who has demonstrated stellar skills all round. The justification offered by Mr.Andrew Guzman, the provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs, is even more symptomatic. According to him, the decision was mandated by"campus security and safety". The vice-president of a leading university considers an anti-war valedictorian a security threat. Being anti-war is seen as a security threat. Let that sink in. Below, I attach the excellent statement from Ms Tabassum - it's really worth reading.

We are excited to launch our #InclusivePathways report. The report emphasises the urgent need for improved accessibility in Irish third level institutions, highlighting the challenges faced by students with neuromuscular conditions in accessing higher education. These challenges range from physical limitations to societal attitudes and systemic barriers. The report’s key recommendation is the publication of more data to support informed decision-making, ensuring that every student's needs are met. The report also calls for a reform of financial supports, the application of universal design principles to new buildings, consultation with disability stakeholders regarding infrastructure, accessibility audits and increased Government funding.By implementing these recommendations, MDI believes that the education environment can become more inclusive and accessible, benefiting not only students with neuromuscular conditions but also enriching the educational community as a whole.🔗Tap the link to find out more and download a copy of the report. https://lnkd.in/eYyaQbnE

“On average the California State University system awards more than 600 doctorate degrees per year,” Dr. Carlos Nevarez went on. “Here at Sacramento State, we offer four doctorate degrees.”A new law signed by Gov. Newsom could change the way students pursue one of the highest degrees in education. Assembly Bill 656, authored by Assemblymen Kevin McCarty, allows California State University campuses to offer doctoral degrees in professional or applied programs, breaking free from the existing limitations of doctoral offerings, provided they do not duplicate degrees offered at University of California campuses.According to McCarty, the mission of CSUs is to extend knowledge and opportunity to diverse communities throughout our state. Before his law took effect, CSUs were largely restricted to offering doctorates in education, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing practice and public health.“AB 656 allows the CSUs to reasonably expand doctoral programs,” McCarty said in a statement. “Doing so will lead to more equitable access to practical doctoral degrees, greater diversity in academia, and the ability to meet California’s changing workforce demands.”Read more here: https://ow.ly/MRCM50QAQY1#sacstate #eddprogram #sacstateedd #education #doctorate #csu
